Before you start

To avoid any confusion as you start this tutorial, we recommend that you start with a standard installation of Drupal. If you start from a known point, everything you see and do should match what is described in this tutorial.

Please ensure that you have:

  • Installed a fresh copy of Drupal 6.x
  • Set up the basic site information
  • Created an admin account using username “admin”, and noted the login details
  • You know how to copy files to your webserver
  • Nothing else…

If you have previously installed Drupal and you have been experimenting with different things, of course there is nothing wrong with that, but it is probably worth quickly re-installing a fresh copy of Drupal.

If you have not already done so, login as administrator. This entire tutorial assumes you are logged in as administrator, unless it specifically says otherwise.

When you are logged in as administrator, you will see a menu at the top left of your page (under the title, most likely in the left sidebar), called “admin”. This is the Navigation menu. The title of the Navigation menu is your user name.

You will be using the Navigation menu a lot in this tutorial (and when you use Drupal in real life). This website uses the notation Navigation | Administer | Site building, for example, to mean:

  • Go to the Navigation menu
  • Click the Administer entry in the Navigation menu
  • Click the Site building entry in the Administer sub-menu
